When Cody Perry came to URI excited for a career as a sports

journalist, he was filled with the same enthusiasm that any

college freshman has for their major. As a lifelong athlete, he

knew he wanted to continue his athletic passions through
writing.

A strong relationship with his high school football coach helped

develop his interest in sports reporting. His coach's father has

been in the field. "I figured that since I enjoyed writing so much

that it would be a good combination," Perry said.

But when Perry, now a junior at the University of Rhode Island,

began taking classes, he realized the difference between what he

wanted to do and what journalism has become. He wasn't a fan

of the muitlmedia aspect of the field and URI's JOR 221 course

specifically turned him far enough away from the major that he

decided to make a change. "I just wasn't really into the video

making...so I decided to switch my major to the business area," he

said.

Now an economics major, Perry plans to combine his passion for writing with his new major by hopefully writing occasionally about economics. Another possibility hes considered is entering the sports-economics area, helping manage team's funds.
